New video game Little Witch Academia: Chamber of Time has been released in Japan. But as the West has a few more months to wait, you may be wondering if the game takes place during the Netflix anime and, if so, when?

The Little Witch Academia Game Plays Like an Old School 90s Brawler

As it turns out, the game does take place within the continuity of the Little Witch Academia anime series. In fact, with the exception the of prologue, the entirety of the game is set on the first day of summer vacation in Akko’s first year of being a witch.

When Akko is given the the punishment over summer break of re-stacking all the books left out in the library after breaking some school equipment, she discovers a secret room. Unfortunately, she all too soon discovers that anyone who enters said room becomes trapped in a time loop—forced to redo the same day over and over again ad infinitum.

Of course, this in turn leads to another question: when does summer break happen within the Little Witch Academia anime? There’s no obvious beach episode or something similar centered around summer break. However, there are a few hints in both the game and anime to help us narrow it down.

The first big hint is obvious to anyone familiar with the Japanese school system. While the fictional school Luna Nova is supposed to exist in England, everything we see about it indicates that it follows the Japanese school year timetable—with classes starting in spring instead of fall. Moreover, in Japanese schools, summer vacation happens in late July—with final exams happening around two weeks before. (The worry is that, if they do the finals right before break, the students will be unable to concentrate.)

Luckily, while we don’t see summer break in Little Witch Academia, we do see Akko’s first final exams in episode seven. This means, at the very least, the game takes place after that episode.

The game itself substantiates this in numerous ways. There are several character introduction flashbacks that use stills from the anime—all scenes from episode seven or before—and Akko’s ability to speak fish (fishish? fishese?) fluently (a skill she masters in episode seven) likewise comes up from time to time.

On the other end of the spectrum, there is a point late in the game where Akko proclaims to Diana that she will become the Moonlit Witch like Chariot before her during the upcoming Samhain Magic Festival. (Samhain is a real traditional Gaelic festival celebrated from October 31 to November 1.) We see the festival itself over the course of episodes 12 and 13.

So it’s obvious that the game takes place sometime between episodes 8 and 11. However, by looking at the costume design in the anime, we can narrow it down even further. Basically, our heroes tend to dress to match the season. In the hot months, like in the game, the students are almost uniformly clad in a white shirt with a blue vest—even when outside. However, from episode 9 to 11, the girls tend to wear their robe jackets when out and about—indicating that it’s no longer the dead of summer at the very least.

That means Chamber of Time happens either before or after episode eight—and which, exactly, is hard to tell. As the vast majority of episode eight takes place inside of a dream—except for the final scene in Akko’s bedroom—the only hints we get are that 1) Lotte is wearing her hot weather uniform while in her room and 2) class is in session. So it could technically be right before summer break or right after.

However, as none of Sucy’s introductory flashback scenes in the game come from episode eight—an episode that is all about Sucy’s twisted mind and her love of mushrooms, it’s more likely that the game takes place before episode eight than after.

So there you have it. Little Witch Academia: Chamber of Time likely takes place between episodes seven and eight of the Little Witch Academia anime. Another mystery solved!

Little Witch Academia: Chamber of Time will be released in North America and Europe in early 2018. The anime, Little Witch Academia, can be seen with English subtitles on Netflix.
