The Straw Hat Pirates are currently fighting to get their friend back from being married off. But the enemy they face might be a bit more than they bargained for.

In the current arc of One Piece, the Whole Cake Island arc, Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates are attempting to rescue their friend, Sanji, from an arranged marriage with the daughter of Charlotte Linlin—or “Lingling”—aka “Big Mom.” Aside from being the matriarch of the Charlotte Family and captain of the Big Mom Pirates, Charlotte is also one of the Yonko, the four strongest and most feared pirates in the world. That puts her head and shoulders above almost any enemy the Straw Hats have ever faced before. But Big Mom’s notoriety and status are only part of the whole. On a base level, she is also unlike almost any foe they’ve encountered before.

Charlotte is ambitious, ruthless, cunning, and intensely cruel. These are qualities shared by various other boss characters faced before. Her heading a massive mafia-esque organization is also not a unique characteristic. She is also gifted with the abilities of a Devil Fruit, something numerous enemies have had. She is also a physical powerhouse, again, not a very uncommon feature. What makes her different from previous enemies is the fact that her physical combat strength does not rely on her Devil Fruit powers.

Every major foe faced before was skewed toward either their special powers or their physical strength—but Charlotte lands smack dab in the middle. The threat of previous major villains like Sir Crocodile, Gekko Moriah, or Donquixote Doflamingo came from their special powers. Those like Captain Kuro, Arlong, or Hody Jones, on the other hand relied on pure physical prowess. Yet, Charlotte alone possesses both attributes independently from each other.

In terms of physical strength, Charlotte rivals the raw power of a giant. Her skin is supposedly impervious under normal conditions and she is an adept user of the Busoshoku and Haoshoku Haki.

Her Devil Fruit power, the Soru Soru Fruit allows her to manipulate people’s souls and even drain the lifespan of those who fear her. By draining lifespans from people and injecting them into inanimate objects or animals, she creates an army of minions. The nature of her Devil Fruit powers are similar to Gekko Moriah, which means it is likely that she has further combat-specific abilities she hasn’t revealed yet.

Each aspect of Charlotte on its own would equal that of a major boss character. The fact that she possesses all of them makes her an opponent beyond almost anything the Straw Hat pirates have ever faced before.

It could be argued that Zoan-type Devil Fruit users like Rob Lucci are similar to Charlotte for possessing both physical strength and Devil Fruit abilities. However, generally, the Zoan-type Devil Fruit powers serve to boost physical abilities, making them integral to a character’s overall combat threat, whereas with Charlotte, both her powers and physical strength on their own are independently extremely dangerous.

Currently, the Straw Hat pirates are slowly working their way up Charlotte’s fortress, the Whole Cake Chateau, but if Luffy really intends on taking down Big Mom, it will probably be much harder than with any enemy faced before.
