Because humiliation is a great survival motivator.

[Note: This article contains major spoilers for episode four of Blood Blockade Battlefront & Beyond.]

The second season of Blood Blockade Battlefront has started off with episodic stories about various members of Libra who didn’t get to be the focus of many episodes in the first season. This has offered more detailed looks at the characters’ personalities, backgrounds, and abilities.

Episode four focuses on the character of Chain Sumeragi, the female agent who hops in and out, seemingly out of nowhere—often to torment her colleague Zapp Renfro. The details of her abilities were never really covered in the first season of the series. All we were informed of was that she is agile, seems to be able to teleport, and has a rather dry personality.

In episode four, we learn right off the bat that Chain is a Jinroh—a.k.a. a werewolf. Unlike the werewolves from lore, though she doesn’t turn into an uncontrollable beast in the light of a full moon. Instead, she has the ability to dilute her own existence. This allows her to phase through solid matter and become invisible to the point where she can be almost completely undetectable. Outside of Libra, she works with a team of other Jinroh as secret agents.

However, as useful as the ability to become undetectable is, part of her existence still needs to remain in order for her to continue to exist. To completely dilute herself would be irreversible, literally erasing her existence from reality making it so that she never existed in the first place. This is something she is forced to do when faced with an enemy who has gained the ability to sense everything, even an invisible Jinroh.

Every trace of her slowly melting away from reality, her companions activate a contingency plan: They send her fellow Libra member, Steven A. Starphase, to her apartment and have him go inside.

Considering that Chain harbors feelings for Steven—that he is unaware of—and considering that her apartment is an utter trash heap, their method for bringing Chain back from the edge of oblivion is essentially the equivalent of bringing someone back from their deathbed by threatening to show their crush their browser history. The results are naturally quite hilarious. The mere act of Steven seeing the conditions in which Chain lives activates an autonomic fight or flight response in her, snapping her back into existence in an instant to kick Steven out by way of throwing furniture at him.

Currently, the second season of Blood Blockade Battlefront has been entirely character-centric episodes with no detectable overarching plot. That said, the episodes have been proving to be both entertainingly lighthearted and serious at the same time. We get to see the characters in various situations that reveal more about them and their role in the Libra organization. It all adds to the Blood Blockade Battlefront world, making for a fun series that never seems to get old.

Blood Blockade Battlefront & Beyond can be viewed with English subtitles on Crunchyroll and English dialogue on FUNimation.
