We had a chance to check out the first episode of upcoming high school romance comedy My Girlfriend is Shobitch at a recent special premiere, and while extreme and outlandish at times, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of familiarity in its core premise.
[Note: This article contains minor spoilers for the first episode of My Girlfriend is a Shobitch.]
First off, My Girlfriend is Shobitch is a comedy with a title that needs a bit of explanation. “Shobitch” is a shortened version of the term “shojo bitch.” In Japanese, the term “bitch” is somewhat different from the English term. It is generally used to describe a girl or woman who is overly promiscuous or slutty. This paired with “shojo”—Japanese for “virgin”—and you get a sexually obsessed girl who has no actual sexual experience: someone whose knowledge of all things sex is entirely secondhand.
My Girlfriend is Shobitch is the story of a young high school boy, Haruka Shinozaki, who manages to ask out the girl of his dreams, Akiho Kosaka, only to discover she has a rather extreme obsession with sex. Her first act of trying to get to know her new boyfriend is to make a direct inquiry as to his sexual fetishes, and every conversation or comment is steered towards the topic of sex—much to Haruka’s chagrin. And yet, despite this deep, deep obsession, Akiho seems obliviously innocent in he repeated faux pas. And thus begins the story of a relationship between an average high school boy and a sex-obsessed girl with limited social skills.
On its surface, the concept seems rather simple, but at its core, the series touches on a very real phenomenon in society—the saturation of second-hand knowledge guiding people’s judgment in real life situations. In the present information age, where knowledge is at our fingertips, it’s easy to mistake words read on a screen for actual real-world experiences.
Akiho isn’t necessarily ignorant; it’s just that her knowledge has been skewed by her endless curiosity for everything sex. Approached by a boy who actually shows an interest in her, her only response is to fall back on things she’s read in book, magazines, and online—regardless of how faulty or slanted it may be.
The result is a hilarious and heartwarming romantic comedy between two inexperienced lovers, with one learning things as they come and the other starting with a very skewed foundation. Under the numerous sex jokes, I felt the first episode hits very close to home in how we all enter new experiences reliant on whatever secondhand knowledge we can get. I look forward to seeing the sort of mixups the two fledgling lovers get into as they learn—or at least one of them learns—that there’s more to life than can just be learned from outside sources.
My Girlfriend is Shobitch is scheduled to begin airing on Japanese TV on October 11, 2017. The series will be viewable with English subtitles on Amazon Anime Strike.
