Re:Creators is a story of fictional heroes fighting it out in the real world. But below that surface layer, there is so much more.

[This article contain spoilers for the entirety of Re:Creators]

On one level, Re:Creators is the story of “recreating” some something lost—namely the life of teenage girl Setsuna.

Sota is a young man wracked by guilt. He knows he is partially responsible for the death of his best friend—that he abandoned her when she needed him most just because of his own jealousy toward her success and talent. Altair, on the other hand, is so driven by the loss of her creator that she vows to destroy the very reality that would allow such a horrible fate to destroy someone so innocent and pure.

Through Sota seeking to atone for his own sins and Altair’s machinations—and the battle between both sides—they manage to recreate the person they both love and keep her resurrected indefinitely. From this they are able to reclaim the inner peace that was stolen from them by Setsuna’s death.

On another level, Re:Creators is about the relationship between a god and its creations. Each Creation in the anime responds to their creators in a different way.

Altair loves her creator as a perfect companion—so much so she is willing to destroy countless worlds to punish those responsible for driving Setsuna to suicide. Selesia, on the other hand, sees her god as a well-meaning yet imperfect father.

Blitz views his god as a cruel devil, toying with his life and those he loves. In Yūya’s eyes, his god is simply a manifestation of fate and not to be blamed for the troubles of his world or life.

It even goes a bit more interesting in the cases of Magane and Meteora. To a psychopathic serial killer like Magane, her creator is a tool. But when she is unable to use him to gain more powers, she kills him without a second thought to prevent him from being used as a weapon against her.

Meteora, however, has to deal with the fact that her god is dead before she even reaches our world. Unlike the others, she will never have the chance to confront her god and decided what kind of person he is. Rather, she is forced to learn about him through his creation—her own world. By playing her own game, she comes to see how much love and effort was put in and thus is able to find her own bit of inner peace.

Re:Creators is also about what it means to be a creator by delving into the various philosophies about writing fiction.

Matsubara, Selesia’s creator, is all for creating a thrilling story, but he sees it as his job to make sure that Selesia and Charon make it out victorious in the end.

Shunma, Blitz’s creator, is pretty much the exact opposite of that. She cares nothing for the characters she writes and will do horrible things to them if she feels that it will make for the best story—that it will serve to excite her audience. To her, the story is everything.

Gai, Alicetaria’s Creator, has a far more hands-off approach. While he creates the world and characters, he doesn’t plan the end. Rather he makes an organic story by putting Alicetaria up against various dilemmas and having her respond naturally. However, this means that she is more than capable of losing in the end. In an odd way, her fate really is in her hands.

Hikayu’s creator, Nishio, clearly created her as wish fulfillment; she is the embodiment of the girl he would love to fall in love with. Thus all the situations in her story are ones that he wishes he could be apart of—and obviously the many players of the game wish to share in that vicarious fantasy for themselves.

The final main layer to Re:Creators is right there in the title: “Re:Creators”—or “About Creators.” Much of the climax and epilogue explores how being a creator affects the person doing the creating. For Setsuna, creating Altair was her final proof that her life had meaning. But it was that need to create that kept Setsuna alive as long as it did. And through Setsuna’s creation, others found that drive to keep going by adding to it themselves. By adding to Altair’s powers, these people became a part of a kind of community: the creators of Altair.

Why Altair Is Both the Hero and Villain of Re:Creators

Or to put it another way, Creating helps make us stronger and helps us deal with all the unfairness in the world by tying us all together. And this is what drives Meteoria to try her hand and being a creator herself in the end.

All in all, Re:Creators is far deeper that just the story of fictional heroes fighting each other with the whole of reality on the line. It is a story about how we create, why we create, and the relationship between creator and creation.

And even that is only scratching the surface of what the series has to offer.
