The Monogatari Series is quite long, but if you want to catch up before the new series premieres this coming weekend—or just want a refresher—we’re here to help.
The following guide lists the Monogatari Series in order of release. Each anime series, special, or movie is likewise broken down by story arc with a brief summary that sets the stage for what the arc is about. The guide also contains links to where each of the various anime can be watched.
[Note: While I worked hard to keep this guide as non-spoiler as possible, certain basic spoilers are so key as to be unavoidable.]
Bakemonogatari (2009 – 2010)

Hitagi Crab (Episodes 1-2)
Former vampire and not-so-average high school boy Koyomi Araragi encounters Hitagi Senjougahara, a schoolgirl who’s being haunted by a supernatural “oddity.” Despite her tendency to use school supplies as weapons against anyone who tries to get close, Araragi decides to try and help her out.
Mayoi Snail (Episodes 3-5)
Hanging out at a park, Araragi and Senjougahara come across Mayoi Hachikuji—a lost elementary schooler who is more connected to the world of oddities than either of the two high schoolers would expect.
Bakemonogatari Recap (Episode 5.5)
This episode is a recap of the first five episodes of Bakemonogatari.
Suruga Monkey (Episodes 6-8)
Araragi meets strangely hyperactive schoolgirl Suruga Kanbaru, an underclassman and former friend of Senjougahara. Later that night, he is attacked by a mysterious oddity in a raincoat.
Nadeko Snake (Episodes 9-10)
While visiting a shrine, Araragi and Kanbaru encounter Nadeko Sengoku—a middle school girl who is suffering from a curse that will soon kill her.
Tsubasa Cat (Episodes 11-15)
Araragi’s best friend Tsubasa Hanekawa begins to suffer from a relapse of her own oddity-based affliction—one that turns her into a selfishly irresponsible cat demon.

Karen Bee (Episodes 1-7)
Senjougahara kidnaps Araragi for mysterious reasons. Meanwhile, Araragi’s sister, Karen—a middle schooler and self-styled champion of justice—tracks down a man who has been selling curses to her classmates.
Nekomonogatari Black (2012)

This is the tale of how Hanekawa first became possessed by the oddity that transforms her into a selfish and irresponsible cat demon.

Nekomonogatari White — Tsubasa Tiger (Episodes 1-5)
On the same day Hanekawa encounters a giant white tiger oddity, her house is burned to the ground. Even as she suspects that the two events might be connected, she begins to relapse into her cat demon form—and this time there is no Araragi around to help her through it.
Summary One (Episode 6)
This episode is a recap of the events of Nekomonogatari Black.
Kabukimonogatari — Mayoi Jiangshi (Episodes 7-10)
Araragi and Shinobu (his former vampire master) attempt to travel one day into the past so that Araragi can finish his summer homework—but end up 11 years in the past instead.
Summary Two (Episode 11)
This episode is a recap of the events of Bakemonogatari episodes 1-10.
Otorimonogatari — Nadeko Medusa (Episodes 12-15)
After Nadeko encounters a snake oddity, she is forced to confront the darker parts of her personality along with her crush on Araragi.
Summary Three (Episode 16)
This episode is a recap of the events of Bakemonogatari episodes 11-15.
Onimonogatari — Shinobu Time (Episodes 17-20)
When a mysterious dark being begins chasing Araragi, Shinobu, and Mayoi, Araragi learns of the unintended consequences stemming from his past interactions with the supernatural.
Koimonogatari — Hitagi End (Episodes 21-26)
With Araragi and Senjougahara set to be killed by a vengeful oddity god upon their graduation from high school, Senjougahara enlists the help of the person she hates the most in the world: conman Deishuu Kaiki.
5 Episode TV Anime Special
Still dealing with the after effects of her curse, Kanbaru begins hearing rumors of a “devil” that collects misfortune.
4 Episode TV Anime Special
As Araragi teeters on the edge of becoming a vampire again, he and Ononoki are forced to deal with Tadatsuru Teori, a powerful oddity hunter that specializes in killing “immortal oddities” like vampires.
13 Episode TV Anime Series
Ougi Formula (Episodes 1-2)
Locked in a classroom with mysterious student Ougi Oshino, Araragi must solve a mystery that happened during his freshman year.
Sodachi Riddle (Episodes 3-4)
Sodachi Oikura returns to school after a long absence—and she absolutely loathes Araragi. However, as Araragi soon discovers, it’s not for the reason he had always believed.
Sodachi Lost (Episodes 5-7)
Sodachi tasks Araragi, Ougi, and Hanekawa with solving the mystery of her missing mother.
Shinobu Mail (Episodes 8-13)
Araragi and Kanbaru encounter a mysterious samurai oddity that wants Shinobu’s oddity-killing sword—and is more than willing to kill Araragi to get it.

12 Episode Short-form Smartphone Anime Series
This is a series of 12 self-contained short stories about possible oddity encounters the main characters have heard of second hand. Each one takes place during a different month of the one year covered by the main story.

7 Episode TV Anime Special
[Note: As this special hasn’t aired yet, even my attempts at non-spoiler summaries my be too spoilery for some. So to read them, simply highlight the blank areas below each title.]
Araragi finds himself standing in front of a friend he thought was gone forever.
Araragi and Senjougahara go on a date together to celebrate White Day.
Araragi and several of his allies meet to plan their final battle against the puppet master responsible for many of the oddity-related events that have been happening in the city.
