One Piece is the best-selling manga in Japan, and that means it has tons of merchandise. This time, the story about a boy trying to become the king of pirates is getting some high-class dolls fashioned by authentic Japanese craftsmen.
The “One Piece Kokeshi” dolls are produced by Usaburo Kokeshi, a company based in Japan’s Gunma Prefecture that specializes in making kokeshi dolls out of wood. The company has been active since 1950.
The Luffy kokeshi has his trademark hat that was hand-carved by an artisan. The red vest, blue pants, and scar on his chest are all hand-painted.
The Zoro kokeshi has his green clothing and hair, scar, and even his three swords.
The Chopper kokeshi has his trademark horns and blue nose.
Pre-orders are being accepted now and the dolls are expected to be delivered to customers sometime in mid-October. Each doll will cost 4,200 yen (about USD $40).
You can watch the One Piece anime as it airs in Japan on Crunchyroll and FUNimation, with the latter releasing the series on home video in North America. Viz Media publishes the manga in English in North America.
