The story of Granblue Fantasy is straight out of a classic JRPG. That’s probably because the series is based on a video game. But one of the major features of the game was missing from the series. Until the final episode, that is.

[Note: This article contains spoilers for Granblue Fantasy: The Animation.]

Granblue Fantasy: The Animation follows the adventures of the protagonist, Gran, and his friends, as they journey to find a fabled land of an ancient long-lost race. Along the journey, they are aided by various allies and obstructed by an evil empire. One of Gran’s first companions is the young girl, Lyria, a mysterious girl with the ability to summon and control the power of mystic creatures. It’s all very template classic JRPG, but the story plays it to the hilt and it all works for an entertaining ride into adventure land.

Granblue Fantasy Is Old-school Fantasy Anime Reborn

However, whereas in the anime series the main character is a young man, players of the video game have another option. As with lots of video games, players of the game can choose whether the main character he or she controls is male or female. The male protagonist is Gran (the name is changeable in the game), but the female protagonist is a character named Djeeta (the name is also changeable in the game) who fans were hoping would make an appearance in the anime.

Well, fans got their wish, because the thirteenth and final episode of the anime was an episode taking place in an alternate reality where the protagonist is Djeeta instead of Gran. In the episode, Djeeta and Lyria reflect on all the adventures they’ve had so far. We’re shown flashback scenes of events in the previous twelve episodes of the series, but with Gran replaced with Djeeta. We see that Djeeta and her friends have gone through everything Gran’s party went through plus a little more. We see that various female characters who only helped out in the fight against Leviathan in the reality where Gran was the protagonist have ended up joining in this one. There are also some other characters who have appeared only briefly in other episodes who have joined as well.

Here’s Who Lent a Hand in the Battle Against Leviathan in Granblue Fantasy

We soon see why the female roster has increased substantially. Episode 13 is a bonus swimsuit episode, with the characters visiting a beach and taking the opportunity for some well-earned rest and relaxation.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a fantasy adventure series without some magic and swordplay, so there’s a side incident involving nefarious doings by the evil empire, led by the series staple baddy, Pommern. It’s all very casual and is mostly played for laughs, which it earns through a great gag that feels equal parts meta and the creators just giving the animators a break.

Overall, the episode is all in fun and a great way for the series to have its cake and eat it too. We have the bulk of the adventure with the male protagonist, Gran, at the helm, and a special bonus episode where we get to see a world with Djeeta as the protagonist as well as some lighthearted swimsuit adventuring. It’s a great way to close off the series in an enjoyable and satisfying way.
