Everyone has at least one or two manga they want adapted into an anime. The staff of Animate—a prolific chain of stores selling anime and anime accessories across Japan—voted on which titles they’d like to see animated. Their selections were displayed at AnimeJapan 2017 last weekend. Here’s what they chose.


Title: Kinban Gourmet Bushimeshi! (On-the-Job Gourmet Bushimeshi!)

Summary: This manga is actually based off of a book written by a samurai from the Edo era. The original book is a record of the food he ate on the job. This is a light-hearted manga that connects the food he eats to his relationships with those around him. This manga has already been adapted into a live-action drama series on Japanese channel NHK that aired from January 10 to February 28, 2017.

Summary: This manga follows a Japanese woman working at an English school who dreams of marrying a man who is assigned to a firm overseas. However, despite having confidence in her intelligence and looks, she can’t get the guy of her dreams. Instead, she is suddenly thrown into talks of an arranged marriage with a monk who is determined to make her his own. This manga was adapted into a live-action TV drama series in 2015.


Title: Karakai Jozu no Takagi-san (Skilled Teaser Takagi)

Summary: A middle school boy is always at the mercy of his teasing female classmate, but he’s determined to have the last laugh.


Title: Hōseki no Kuni

Summary: In a futuristic Earth, the world is populated by genderless gemstone-like beings that must fight against invaders from the moon who seek to capture the gem beings and turn them into decorations. One gemstone who is too weak to fight is given the assignment to make a natural history encyclopedia.

In fact, this manga already has been adapted into animation in the form of a promotional video for the manga itself. No other anime adaptation of the work has been announced. You can see the full anime clip below:


Title: Amano Megumi ha Sukidarake! (Megumi Amano is Wide Open!)

Summary: A 4-panel manga about two normal policemen protecting the peace of Tokyo’s Nakano neighborhood. The two main characters have even been used as mascot characters for the real Nakano Police Bureau.

Summary: A girl who was a pitcher in middle school wasn’t planning to join a baseball club in high school due to past regrets, but when she reunites with her childhood friend, all of that begins to change.


Title: Kimetsu no Yaiba (Blade of Demon’s Bane)

Title: Niehime to Kemono no Ou (The Sacrificial Princess and the Beast King)
Author: Yū Tomofuji
Magazine: Hana to Yume
Publisher: Hakusensha

Summary: A girl lives in a world in which humans and man-eating beasts have made a pact: A human sacrifice will be made to the king of the demons periodically. However, the girl that has been offered as a sacrifice does not fear the half-human king, and he in turn seeks to have the girl become his empress.


Title: Five+
Author: Shiori Furukawa
Magazine: Margaret
Publisher: Shueisha
Began Serializing: 2017 (but the original manga ran from 2004 to 2011)
Summary: The sequel to a manga about a bespectacled girl who transfers into a class with only males. Although they don’t take her seriously at all at first, the group of the most influential and talented boys in the class come to like her—especially the leader.

This manga has not been adapted into anime, but has gotten a drama CD in the past. A live-action TV drama adaptation of the original Five story is currently in the works.


Title: Idol no Tamago Aitama
Author: Shiori Furukawa

Summary: This is a four-panel manga about a girl who attends “Angel Egg Academy”—a school that trains talented girls. The school is home to many types of students, including a genius child star, a sharp-tongued tsundere model, a magician-in-training, a rising star singer, and more.


Title: Liar x Liar

Summary: A twenty-year old woman goes out to Shibuya, Tokyo in her friend’s high school uniform for fun, but gets spotted by her younger step-brother. Not only does he not recognize her, but he falls in love with her!


Title: Fire Force (Enn Enn no Shouboutai)

Summary: A boy who despite admiring heroes and wanting to become one himself is called a monster by those around him. Determined to make his dream come true, he joins the “Special Firefighting Squad” where he helps his comrades to extinguish humans that have been turned into flame-covered monsters. This manga is licensed by Kodansha Comics in North America.

Summary: The manga takes place in a world where some people have the ability have the ability to control spirits with their singing voices. The protagonist of this story, a “failure” siren, has her life turned upside down when she encounters a fellow siren who has run away from home to search for her mother.


Title: Papa to Oyaji no Uchi Gohan (Papa & Dad’s Meals at Home)
