The dream isn’t over–actually, it hasn’t even begun.
Directed by Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex director Kenji Kamiyama, upcoming film Ancien and the Magic Tablet (titled Hirune Hime Shiranai Watashi no Monogatari, lit. “Napping Princess: The Story of the Me I Don’t Know” in Japanese) will hit Japanese theaters on March 18, 2017.
However, it’s not the only Ancien and the Magic Tablet project on the way. A Hulu original short film based on the movie titled Ancien to Maho no Tablet ~Mō Hitotsu no Hirune Hime~ (lit. Ancien and the Magic Tablet ~The Other Side of the Napping Princess~) is also currently in production.
This short film takes the first part of its title from the official English title of the movie and serves as “another story.” It will premiere in early March–before Ancien and the Magic Tablet premieres in Japanese theaters. The actors from the movie will return for the short film. Here are the comments they have for the new side story:
Kokone and Ancien. When I heard I’d have to act out the voice of two different girls, I was pretty worried, but Director Kamiyama told me that I didn’t have to force myself to change my voice. Because of that, I was able to record my lines without worrying, taking care to remember that Kokone has her own sense of justice, and Ancien has hers. I was really happy that I was able to have fun as I acted.
–Mitsuki Takahata (voice of Kokone Morikawa, Ancien)
I think I was able to act my two roles of Momotarō and Peach without being too conscious about it. Unlike filming for a live-action movie, for animation, the actor has to record their lines while looking at the storyboards. It was a very refreshing and interesting experience for me. Acting by using my voice might become a habit of mine.
–Yōsuke Eguchi (voice of Momotarō Morikawa, Peach)
Other cast members include theater actor Arata Furuhata as Bewan, voice actress Rie Kugimiya (Fullmetal Alchemist’s Alphonse, The Familiar of Zero’s Louise) as Joy, and live-action actor Hideki Takahashi as King Heartland. The animation will be animated at studios Signal.MD and IMAGICA IMAGEWORKS. Just like the film, Kenji Kamiyama will direct the short movie, but Harumi Doki (Cyborg 009 Call of Justice) will be providing the scripts. Takashi Sano (Cyborg 009 Call of Justice) will be handling storyboards, while Yōko Shimomura (Kingdom Hearts, Super Mario RPG) will be composing the score.
The press release for the film also lists the story for the film:
The story unable to be told in the film is unveiled.
What is the secret hidden in the fairy tale Kokone was told as a child…?
And what does Momotarō–her father who was entrusted with this secret–feel?
The short film Ancien to Maho no Tablet ~Mō Hitotsu no Hirune Hime~ will allow you to enjoy the story of the main movie even more, and can be enjoyed in any watch order.
Ancien and the Magic Tablet will make its North American debut at the New York International Children’s Film Festival on March 19. There is no word of the short film’s release outside of Japan as of press time.
