The Danganronpa 3 anime may be over, but it looks like the festivities of despair will be going on a little longer.

Spike Chunsoft’s Danganronpa franchise finished off its “Hope’s Peak” story with not one, but two Danganronpa 3 anime, separated into the “Future Arc” and “Despair Arc” storylines. Just like the anime, the franchise inspired two riddle-solving events based on the two arcs of the show. The Future Arc game was held at Sega’s Joypolis indoor theme park, while the Despair Arc game is being held at the J-Square Shinagawa venue until November 27.

Anime Now! got the chance to participate in the Despair Arc game produced by riddle-solving game production company Asobi Factory, and well… All of us but Toshi died.

The game sets up players at a table with a maximum of six players. The story begins with the players at their respective tables–along with an original character named Yayoi Kumamido, played by an actress at the venue–being invited to take a special exam by a certain someone.

I say invitation, but in fact, you have no choice but to accept the task and complete the test before time runs out. If you can’t finish the examination before the allotted time passes, then a punishment is waiting for you… That punishment being “death.” (Note: This game contains no actual physical death or bodily harm.)

As a team, we worked together to solve a number of Danganronpa-themed puzzles. The majority of these puzzles focused on the Japanese language, and despite being fluent in the language, some of them were extremely difficult. However, when we needed hints, assistants with paper Monokuma masks called “Monokuma Faces” would come to assist. Despite this, I felt extremely powerless when compared to Toshi and the other members of our team. The amount of wordplay and creativity needed to solve some of the puzzles confounded me.

Each attendee to the game receives one postcard with a different illustration from the upcoming Danganronpa V3 game and is free to take home any of the paper puzzle materials that aren’t laminated as a souvenir.

The event will be held four more times on November 27. Although I wouldn’t reccomend the game to anyone without sufficient (fluent) Japanese knowledge, if you are interested, the official website for the game has the times and ticket information. The event ends on the 27th, so hurry!

FUNimation is streaming both the Despair and Future arcs of Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope’s Peak High School in North America with both English subtitles and an English dub.
