Hellsing creator Kouta Hirano began his Drifters manga in Shonengahosha’s YOUNG KING OURS magazine in 2009. A promotional video for the manga was included with the HELLSING OVA X anime in 2012 and a full television anime adaptation was announced in March 2015. The story of Drifters follows the conflict between Drifters, a group made up of historical heroes and leaders, and Ends, who are magic-using, malice-filled non-humans taken from history.
In the year 1600, the great, decisive Battle of Sekigahara was underway. The commander of the Shimazu clan who ruled over the Satsuma Domain Toyohisa Shimazu escaped from the place he was supposed to die after a fighting withdraw. Wandering alone in the mountains for a period of time, battered by the rain, he eventually found himself in a hallway-like room with an infinite number of doors. Almost immediately after asking the mysterious man residing there named Murasaki where he was, Toyohisa was thrown to the other side of one of the stone doors.
…He arrived in Orte, another world ruled by the state in which humans and demi-humans–beings not considered people–live amongst each other. Alongside other war heroes throughout history who drifted to Orte (including Nobunaga Oda, Yoichi Nasu No), Toyohisa dashes through the battlefield in the other world, his warrior spirit never wavering!
Voice: Yuichi Nakamura
A military commander of the Satsuma from Japan’s Warring States period. He is modeled after Toyohisa Shimazu, the second assistant to the Minister. He participated in the Battle of Sekigahara as part of the Western forces. In the middle of his retreat, he prepared to die fending off enemies attempting to attack his uncle. However, he was transported to another world by Murasaki after he escaped the place he was supposed to die.
With an excellent sense when it comes to warfare and daring and courageous personality, he does not hesitate to attack, even when his life is at risk. He also has a chivalrous spirit, as he believes that rewards will come to the righteous and resentment will come to those who do bad deeds.
Voice: Naoya Uchida
A famous general of the Owari Province during the Warring States period. Based on the historical figure Oda Nobunaga, a warrior with a skilled eye for battle tactics. He had aimed to unite the land by using a large number of firearms, which were new technology during his time. However, right before it seemed he would be able to carry out his ambitions, he died at Honnoji Temple after being betrayed by his subordinate Mitsuhide Akechi.
His war tactics are just as strong as ever in the other world. He uses his resourcefulness to assist Toyohisa and his team not only on the battlefield, but in other areas as well.
Yoichi Nasu No
Voice: Mitsuki Saiga
A general of the Minamoto clan who lived during the closing years of the Heian period. Based on the real historical figure Nasu no Yoichi. Born the youngest of eleven children, he joined Minamoto no Yoshitsune’s campaign during the Genpei War.
A warrior with extraordinary skill with a bow, he was talented enough to shoot a fan placed on a ship swaying in the waves at the Battle of Yashima. After being sent to the other world, he makes a base alongside Nobunaga. His appearance is so beautiful that he sometimes gets mistaken for a woman.
Voice: Tatsuhisa Suzuki
A pilot for the Imperial Japanese Navy. He was the squadron leader of fleet S301, “Shinsengumi” (a name literally meaning “The New Chosen Ones”). He shot down many enemy ships during the Pacific War and has many victories under his belt. He went missing after a telegram was received saying that a machine gun had spontaneously discharged on August 1, 1945.
He has a frank personality, and he has a habit of saying “idiot” and “you dumbass.”
Voice: Yutaka Aoyama
A genius tactician of Carthage, which was destroyed by Rome. An old man with only one eye. He invaded the Italian Peninsula during the Punic Wars by crossing the Alps and threw Rome into chaos by launching a surprise attack.
He shows some feebleness due to his old age, but he gains back his vigour as a seasoned commander and gives advice to Nobunaga and his other comrades. He is constantly bickering with his rival Scipio. His favorite food is raspberries.
Voice: Hiroshi Yanaka
A general of the Roman Republic. A hero who ended the Second Punic War by defeating the Carthage forces lead by his rival Hannibal at the Battle of Zama.
He has been under the protection of Oct since coming to Orte.
Voice: Daisuke Ono
A man who formed the Wild Bunch gang of robbers in the American Old West. He gained a bad reputation alongside his partner Kid by committing a multitude of bank and train robberies.
Even in the other world, he works alongside Kid. His weapons are two pistols.
Voice: Wataru Takagi
The partner of Butch Cassidy, the leader Wild Bunch gang of robbers in the American Old West. He has more common sense and is more level-headed than his partner.
Even in the other world, he works alongside Butch. His weapon of choice is a Gatling gun.
Voice: Mitsuru Miyamoto
A mysterious man who continues to send the Drifters into the other world. A man of few words and a heavy smoker, he opposes EASY by continuing to send Drifters into the other world. He sits at a desk in the creepy corridor of doors where he uninterestedly continues to work. He remains aware of the movements of the Drifters and Ends by reading a newspaper that automatically updates to reflect the happenings in the other world.
Voice: Kanae Ito
A mysterious girl who continues to send the Ends into the other world. The opposite of Murasaki, she has a hysterical, expressive personality. Due to him sending Drifters into the other world, she fights against him. She checks the movements of the Drifters and Ends with messages that are automatically sent to her computer.
