Today at the Tokyo Game Show 2016 in Japan, Square showed off its first demo for Kingdom Hearts 0.2: Birth by Sleep: A Fragmentary Passage–a brand new Kingdom Hearts adventure that will be included in the upcoming Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8: Final Chapter Prologue.
Taking place after the end of Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance, A Fragmentary Passage follows Birth by Sleep protagonist and female Keyblade Master Aqua as she wanders through the Realm of Darkness.
In the TGS demo, you take control of Aqua in a shattered version of a town. By finding mysterious clockwork structures (and attacking them) you are able to rewind time in the remnants of the town, eventually rebuilding a path to the castle looming in the distance.
The demo plays like the numbered titles in the Kingdom Hearts series–instead of like Birth by Sleep as you might expect given Aqua’s presence. You can attack normally or use the D-pad to select magic as you fight the Heartless that appear.
When you find each clockwork structure, Aqua gains a new ability (like a double-jump or an aerial dash) that helps to show just how much bigger the area is than the segmented areas of past Kingdom Hearts games–in the vertical as well as the horizontal.
All in all, the demo was exactly what I am looking for in a PlayStation 4 Kingdom Hearts experience: something that is both familiar and putting the greater power of the system to use.
Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8: Final Chapter Prologue will be released on the PlayStation 4 in Japan on January 12, 2017 and in the rest of the world on January 24, 2017.
