Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 3rei!! (pronounced “dry,” because German) is the fourth season of the Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya anime series. The series is basically what would happen if you took the Fate universe and blended it with a magical girl story. If you aren’t already a Fate fan, the entry hurdle is pretty high. However, if you are already a fan, the series is pure fan service, and none more so than in the current storyline.
Note: This article contains minor spoilers for the Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya series.
Fate/kaleid liner takes place in an alternate timeline of the Fate universe and featuring the character, Illyasveil (Illya) von Einzbern (say that three times fast) as its series protagonist. She has been given the power of a magical girl by a sentient magic wand (just go with it) and through using special cards can obtain the powers of heroes of myth and legend (I said just go with it).
At the start of 3rei!!, following after the events of the previous series, 2wei Hertz!, Illya and her friends are caught up in a sudden battle with two powerful characters, Angelica and Beatrice. Illya’s friend, Miyu, is kidnapped and an explosion results in Illya being hurled to a parallel world. Lost and confused, she and her newly found amnesiac friend, Tanaka, are soon aided by the blond-haired, red-eyed child, Gilgamesh, an antagonist from the previous series, 2wei Hertz!
A child version of the ancient hero of lore, in the Fate universe, Gilgamesh is a supremely powerful and avaricious being. His treasure trove of wonders gives him access to a near-limitless number of weapons that he can launch at enemies at will–making him a deadly enemy and a dangerous ally. Even in his de-aged state, Gilgamesh not someone one wants to trifle with.
Together, they storm the Einsworth castle where Angelica and Beatrice lie in wait. There, Gilgamesh reveals his reasons for aiding Illya: As a servant, Gilgamesh is bound by the rules of the Fate universe, meaning that his powers can be accessed by another if they possess his servant card and know how to use it. This is something he can’t abide. The one also using his powers in this case is the kidnapper Angelica.
The result is an all-out clash between two characters both possessing the abilities of one of the most powerful beings in the entire series. As a fan, it was really hard not to get overly excited. It’s like one of those ultimate dream matchups. I should have popped some popcorn.
One of the charms of the Fate/kaleid liner series is that it is total fan service for Fate fans interlaced with a solid story. The animation is also top notch, which certainly doesn’t hurt. The whole thing is like cotton candy for an established fan like me, and I’m pumped to see what happens next.
