Do you like swords? Do you like beautiful men? Do you like swords reimagined as beautiful men? Then maybe you’ll be excited for this: the staff of the upcoming Touken Ranbu – Hanamaru anime unveiled the character designs for the two main characters of the series on Tuesday. The characters are being designed by Junichirō Taniguchi. The voice actors for Yasusada and Kiyomitsu–Mitsuhiro Ichiki and Toshiki Masuda–also gave their comments regarding the upcoming series.
“Yasusada is a jolly (maybe?) kind of person who usually has a very gentle feeling to him, but seems like a completely different person during battle when he loses his cool. Personally, I’m looking forward to seeing how much we’ll be able to see him actually fight in Hanamaru. Will I be able to say, ‘Drop your head and die!’? (laughs)”
– Mitsuhiro Ichiki (voice of Yasusada Yamatonokami)
“[Kiyomitsu’s] image colors are black and red, so I had initially considered him to be kind of a quirky, troublesome kind of character, but I think he also has kind of an adorable, mischievous side of him. That’s why I’d like to play him really freely, at least as freely as I can without getting hated on.”
– Toshiki Masuda (voice of Kiyomitsu Kashū)
In addition, the staff announced that Tōken Ranbu -Hanamaru- will be appearing at the Kyoto International Manga & Anime Fair 2016 event on September 17 and 18. The anime is helping to promote the fair with the collaborative visual below:
Touken Ranbu – Hanamaru is an upcoming television anime series that is inspired by Nitroplus and DMM Games’ Japan-only mobile game Touken Ranbu, which transforms historical swords into beautiful men. The game actually has two anime in the works, with Touken Ranbu – Hanamaru set to premiere this October from animation studio Doga Kobo, and another anime tentatively titled Touken Ranbu from studio ufotable is planned for a 2017 premiere.
