Atsuko Asano began her Battery series of novels in 1996, and released a total of six volumes, with the final one being released in January 2005. As of 2016, the series has over ten million copies in print.
The baseball story inspired a manga adaptation in Kadokawa Shoten’s Monthly Asuka magazine, an NHK radio drama, a live-action film, and a live-action television series. A television anime adaptation on Fuji TV animation block Noitamina was announced in March 2016.
Takumi Harada is a pitcher who has amazing intuition when it comes to baseball. When Takumi moves to Nitta–a town by the mountains–just as he enters middle school, he meets Kō Nagakura, a catcher who is able to catch his full-force pitch. The two join Nitta Higashino Middle School’s baseball team, and they are forced to face conflicts within the team, troubles caused by the teachers’ circumstances, and sometimes even fights amongst themselves. The pitcher and catcher must grow together as a “battery.”
Voice: Kōki Uchiyama
The protagonist of the story. Takumi is a stoic young man who has been blessed with a strong throwing arm, but never forgets to work hard. Because of his lack of interest in those around him, he often gets misunderstood as being cold.
Voice: Tasuku Hatanaka
The other protagonist of the story. He was intrigued when he saw Takumi playing baseball in the past, and decided to become a catcher to catch his pitches. He has a bright and carefree personality.
Voice: Yūi Fujimaki
Takumi’s younger brother. His body is frail and he is often ill, but he wants to become a pitcher like his brother. He’s very sensitive to his surroundings, and can often tell what Takumi is feeling.
Voice: Yūki Ono
The fourth player up to bat on his champion school’s team, Shūgo is a serious and blunt young man who is known as a strong player all around the country. He ends up seeing Takumi play baseball, and challenges him to a match.
Voice: Ryōhei Kimura
A shortstop on the baseball team. He is very aloof, and his only change in expression is his sardonic smile. He tries not to really get involved in anything. He is Shugo’s childhood friend, and calls Takumi “Princess” since he is somewhat fixated on him.
Voice: Yūichirō Umehara
The captain of the Nitta Higashino baseball team, and the shortstop. He is very skilled in both offense and defense, and as such is respected by his fellow teammates. Although he may look unrefined, he is quite the strategist, and can find an opponent’s weak spot without even thinking about it.
