It’s been rumored for around a month now, but it’s finally here: a live-action film adaptation of Hideaki Sorachi’s Weekly Shonen Jump manga Gintama has been announced with a release window of 2017.
The film was formally announced by distributor Warner Brothers on Friday when they opened an official website for the movie. Shun Oguri (TERRAFORMARS, Arakawa Under the Bridge: The Movie) will star as one of the leads in the film, but the website doesn’t specify what role he will play. Yuichi Fukuda will direct the film.
To make things just a bit more interesting, the website is taking submissions for extras to appear in the film. There aren’t any major regulations, besides promising not to annoy the actors on set or reveal information about the film before it’s released. Extras are scheduled to begin filming next summer.
And yes. I applied.
Sentai Filmworks released the Gintama anime in America on DVD until episode 51 and released the first animated film on DVD and Blu-ray. Crunchyroll has since streamed all episodes of the television anime.
