Manga creator Satsuki Yoshino began her Barakamon manga about a young calligrapher who goes to live in Nagasaki Prefecture in Square Enix’s Monthly Shonen Gangan magazine as a one-shot. Because of the positive reception the one-shot received, the author published the second and third chapters of the manga in 2009. Soon after, the manga began serialization on Square Enix’s Gangan Online free manga website in the February of that same year. The original manga inspired a television anime adaptation in 2014.

In 2013, Yoshino began a spinoff manga taking place six years prior to the original Barakamon manga focusing on protagonist Sei’s high school days. Yoshino ended the manga in June 2016.

Yen Press publishes both the Barakamon and Handa-kun manga in North America, and FUNimation has licensed the Barakamon anime for North American streaming and home video.

Sei Handa is the son of a calligraphy master who also practices this art form while attending high school. His classmates find it hard to get near him because they think he’s so cool, but Handa himself misunderstands their actions and ends up thinking that they hate him.
