After finishing her Aria manga in 2008, female manga creator Kozue Amano began serializing a new manga titled Amanchu! (lit. Woman of the Sea) on Mag Garden’s Comic Blade manga website that same year. An anime adaptation of the series was announced in October 2015, with Aria director Junichi Satō (Sailor Moon, Pretear) returning to direct the television series. Like Aria, Amanchu! is a peaceful story taking place by the sea.

It’s spring, the season when things change the most. When Hikari Kohinata, a girl who was born and raised in the town of Izu, and Futaba Ōki, a girl who just moved to the town from Tokyo, both enroll in Yumegaoka High School and meet each other, their lives change forever. Invited by Hikari, Futaba steps into the world of scuba diving, a world that’s completely unfamiliar to her. With Hikari’s positive attitude and the beauty of scuba diving that lets her realize just how small she is in the world, the cowardice in Futaba’s heart begins to melt away. The two end up forming a friendship as diving buddies, allowing them to experience a plethora of happy moments together.

Hikari Kohinata
Voice: Eri Suzuki

A first-year student at Yumegaoka High School. Her hobby is scuba diving, and because of this, she joined her school’s scuba diving club as soon as she enrolled like it was the most natural thing in the world. With her relaxed, positive, and bright personality, the people around her find themselves naturally moving to her beat. Hikari is also very knowledgable when it comes to her hometown of Izu. Her dream for the future is to become a pro scuba instructor. Her nickname is “Pikari.”

Futaba Ōki
Voice: Ai Kayano

A first-year student at Yumegaoka High School. After graduating middle school, she moved from Tokyo to Izu, a place she has absolutely no connection to. She is held back by her negative way of thinking, and worries that she wouldn’t be able to take a fresh new step forward, even if she tried. However, she starts scuba diving thanks to the influence of her classmate Hikari. Futaba’s hobby is taking pictures of wonderful things with her cell phone. Her nickname is “Teko.”

Ai Ninomiya
Voice: Saori Ōnishi

The second-year student who is the head of the Yumegaoka High School Diving Club. She’s blunt with her words and is as flexible as a brick, but is actually doting and caring. However, she doesn’t hold back when it comes to her twin brother Makoto, and kicks him whenever she has the opportunity. She loves people that do their best because it gives her strength as well.

Mato Katori
Voice: Shizuka Itō

Hikari and Futaba’s homeroom teacher and the diving club’s advisor. With the motto of “fun is limitless,” she believes that playing while a student is in high school is a part of the educational curriculum. She may look irresponsible at first glance, but her eye for her students is unparalleled.

Mato Katori
Voice: Yurika Kubo

The principal’s cat. He’s known as the mascot of the club because he shows up in the club room so much. Because his ears and tail are brown, the nickname-loving Hikari names him “Chakomon” (Brown Advisor). He has a gentle personality, but is a bit of a masochist who likes being teased by others.

Kino Hinata
Voice: Kikuko Inoue

Hikari’s grandmother who runs the beach hut “Amanchu-ya” by Izu’s seaside. She provides diving services at her store, and her granddaughter sometimes helps out as an instructor. She’s overflowing with deep proverbs that affect not only Hikari, but even her friend Futaba who just moved from the city. The pork miso soup she serves after a diving trip is absolutely delicious.
